At the ripe age of 25 I was diagnosed with a serious arthritic condition in my hips due to a combination of heredity, exessive long-distance running and a slight inclination to 'party'. The doctor gravely told me that I had the hips of a 65-year old and that I would have to have them replaced by age 30. That, I decided, was never going to happen. I read everything I could find on arthritis, improved my lifestyle by ceasing my 5 - 10 mile lunch-time and after-work runs and by reducing the toxins I put into my body.
Those actions may have started some sort of a healing process but my hips continued to get worse. In fact, the pain and inflammation worsened quickly -- to the point where one day I just collapsed in the hallway at my place of employment.
A Caring Sports Medicine Specialist to the Rescue
A gentle, caring, young Sports Medicine Specialist examined me and told me there was little he could do. But he introduced me to the idea of low impact, non-weight-bearing exercise. From there I really took the ball. My father had been a college athlete and a competitive weight lifter and had even done a short stint at training professional athletes. I combined the knowledge I had gained from him with the knowledge I had gained from studying martial arts and ballet and began to create the Zero Impact Workout. I continue to refine it to this day but it has been more or less unchanged now for about 10 years.
